The Batchelor Environmental Center (BEC) includes an offsite husbandry center located at Florida International University’s Biscayne Bay Campus. The facility is on land shared by the university and the State of Florida (Oleta River State Park). This new center features aquarium support facilities and is the site of MUVE’s most recent restoration project, which will begin in the fall of 2016. Volunteers will create an initial nucleus of restored habitat around BEC that will be extended into adjacent public lands at Oleta River State Park. This restoration will be interpretive in that visitors, through signage, would be able to learn about what native habitats once existed at the site and through citizen science activity stations monitor the ecological impact of that restoration.
