Science for All: A Year of Frost Science Education Initiatives

Frost Science is not only a place for fun and exploration, but an institution dedicated to engaging people of all ages with science. Our educational programs offer opportunities for museum guests, community members, and K-12 students and educators to be curious, explore the unknown, and grow to love science as much as we do! Each day, our passionate team of science education professionals design, develop, and facilitate memorable and novel experiences that spark or nurture guests’ interests in science. This past year, the team engaged almost 130,000 people of all ages in immersive science learning experiences. Read on to learn more about Frost Science’s educational impact in the 2023-2024 fiscal year (November 1, 2023 – October 31, 2024).

K-12 Students & Teachers

  • This year, Frost Science welcomed 58,600 students on field trips, with 5,500 of them joining our museum educators for unique and inquiry-based learning opportunities in our Knight Learning Center through our Learning Labs.
  • We provided 12,300 Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) Title I students with free field trips to the museum, developed a marine science pilot program with BioTECH @ Richmond Heights High School, and engaged City of Miami Beach Title I students in after school science programming focused on physics and coral reefs.
  • Our STEM Designation program, built on a partnership with M-DCPS, provided 37 classrooms (over 1,700 students) with free field trips, bus transportation and hands-on learning experiences—both in the classroom and at the museum—which continuously immersed them in science in new and exciting ways.
  • Our team also designs and develops curriculum for M-DCPS, as well as spearheading professional development workshops for informal and formal educators of all science disciplines. This past year, we introduced over 200 teachers to best practices in science education, linking what they teach in the classroom to information presented in our museum.
  • In August we launched the STEM Challenge, a year-long engineering design challenge that engages more than 1,500 middle and high school students from 40 schools/programs in a STEM focused competition. The top performing students will earn scholarships to Florida public universities.
  • Finally, to spark a passion for science in the youngest learners, we now provide our research-based curriculum, Early Childhood Hands-On Science (ECHOS), to all VPK classrooms in M-DCPS—reaching over 4,000 young future scientists in 179 classrooms.

Our Community

  • Our team works outside of the classroom to bring science to our community. Over the past several years, Frost Science has collaborated with GEN2050, a STEAM-focused youth development program, to create fun and interactive summer camp curriculum that spans topics of the land, sea, and air. This summer, 400 youth from around the county experienced our curriculum.
  • Frost Science outreach programs engaged more than 6,000 learners across 70+ programs in libraries, universities, schools, and at community festivals this past year.
  • We hosted five major special events this year at the museum: Spooky Science Halloween, Earth Day, World Ocean Day, Technology & Engineering Day, and Family Fun Festival. Across all of these, we and our nonprofit, university, and community partners engaged 15,000 guests with science activities and performances.
  • Our mission of connecting the Miami community to science is amplified through our Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) program. UBMS is a four-year program committed to ensuring under-resourced and first-generation high school students are exposed to different STEM subjects and have access to college resources. This immersive science learning experience engaged 65 students weekly this past year, including during a six-week intensive marine science summer camp.

Museum Guests & Families

  • Reaching family units so they can experience the magic of science together is a core goal for the museum’s education team. Last year, we achieved this by welcoming 500 families to Mini-Me Science, a program for children ages 2 to 5, and Tech Lab, a technology-centered program designed for families with children ages 7 and up.
  • We have engaged museum guests through five new and unique science shows and Sparks of Science activities 23,000 times.
  • Last fiscal year, we led 24 Just for Me programs. Our Just for Me programming also earned us the Outstanding Community Partner Award by the UM/NOVA Center for Autism and Related Disabilities.
  • Last, but certainly not least, our award-winning camp programs engaged over 900 science campers through 12 weeks of immersive winter, spring, and summer camp.

Frost Science prides itself on delivering high-quality science education for all. Next time you visit, join these fun and memorable learning experiences carefully crafted by our education team!
