nightLAB Series Brings Frost Science Alive After Hours

This year, Frost Science has been running a new quarterly after-hours event series for adults (21+) called nightLAB. Thursday, October 17 will be the last nightLAB event of 2024, and it is set to be the best one yet. Under the theme Weird Science, we will present spooky, trippy, and unusual science through a slate of hands-on activities and unique science presentations.

October’s nightLAB event is our fourth of the year. The series started in January 2024 to open Frost Science to an adult-only audience, who may not otherwise have time to enjoy the museum on their own.

“Frost Science is a great place for families, but we’re more than that,” says Senior Director of Membership and nightLAB co-lead, Jessica Casinelli. “Being here without children in attendance changes the experience. nightLAB gives adults a chance to delve into our exhibitions in a new way, and we’ve seen huge demand for this programming.”

Each nightLAB event is unique. Previous events have been centered on exciting Frost Planetarium performances from Miami DJ Danny Daze and space rock band Skyview. Another was ocean-themed, immersing guests in the science and beauty of our marine environment. We’ve hosted many community partners, such as Waterlust and Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, and educated thousands of guests through hands-on science activities.

To meet popular demand for even more science content, in July we unveiled a new nightLAB feature called “Expert on Call.” Our experts are accomplished scientists doing interesting work on a topic related to the event’s theme. Our first “Expert on Call,” Vickie Kloeris, was a former NASA food scientist who joined us to share her experiences feeding astronauts on the International Space Station. Her standing-room-only talks were the star of the evening.

We’re excited to continue this feature at the upcoming event. October’s “Expert on Call” is Florida International University chemist, Dr. Joseph Lichter. He’ll be giving a series of short, engaging scientific presentations about the effects of drugs on the brain, a topic perfectly suited to our 21+ audience. If you want to see neuroscience in a new and trippy way, this event is for you.

More interested in space than the brain? We have something weird for you, too! October’s nightLAB will be the unveiling of a new Frost Planetarium show, Cosmic Horrors. “It’s unlike any planetarium show we’ve done before,” says Frost Planetarium Director Alec Warren, who led the show’s production. “The show highlights the spooky, thrilling, and weird science of the cosmos.”

In addition to these great opportunities, the October nightLAB has much more to offer. We’ll have telescopes set up on the museum’s rooftop for stargazing, a hands-on CSI-style activity led by real forensic scientists, weird science trivia by Biscayne Bay Brewing, a (literally) explosive live-action science stage show, and much more.

We hope to see you on October 17—click here to grab your nightLAB tickets today. An evening at the museum has never been this weird!
