Dredging activities can bury corals under layers of sediment. In Port Everglades and PortMiami, several species of corals were at risk of being smothered during the dredging process. To prevent this loss, the corals were removed and relocated to Frost Science. These corals will remain in our care as ambassador animals, and you can see some of these rescued corals in the WetLab!
The summer of 2023 saw ocean temperatures reach beyond what corals can survive. As slow growing animals, corals cannot adapt fast enough to rapidly increasing temperatures. To prevent mass die-offs in coral nurseries, many facilities began removing fragments and colonies from the ocean to land based facilities like ours where the temperature can be regulated. At Frost Science, we took in two new pillar coral colonies that we are currently caring for in the WetLab.
